Vegan Diet - Benefits and Drawbacks

Advantages and disadvantages of Vegan diet

What is vegan diet?

A vegan diet is a natural, plant-based diet that excludes all meat, dairy (milk), eggs, and animal byproducts. This diet can offer enormous health benefits, such as promoting heart health and managing healthy weight levels. However, it can also cause various nutritional deficiencies.

Health Benefits

  1. Good Heart Health: People who follow a vegan diet are generally called "vegans." They often tend to have low blood pressure and low levels of LDL (which is called bad cholesterol). A diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains is beneficial for maintaining good cardiovascular (cardio means heart, and vascular means vessels) health. It can significantly reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases.
  2. Weight Management: Plant-based foods are enriched with a high fiber content and contain low saturated fats. This helps in maintaining a healthy body weight and keeping our BMI (Body Mass Index) within a normal range.
    • Note: BMI stands for Body Mass Index. It is a numerical value used to screen for weight categories—such as underweight, healthy weight, overweight, and obesity—just by comparing body weight to height.
  3. Diabetes Management: Plant-based foods are rich in fiber and have a low Glycemic Index. As a result, they can reduce blood sugar levels and improve insulin sensitivity. Consequently, vegans rarely suffer from diabetes.
  4. Low Risk of Cancer: Researchers suggest that a diet rich in fruits and vegetables can reduce the risk of occurrence for many types of cancers, such as colon cancer, prostate cancer, and pancreatic cancer.
  5. Good Digestive Health: A fiber-rich vegan diet is generally considered excellent for helping with proper digestion and regular bowel movements. It reduces the chance of constipation and other colon-related issues.

Drawbacks of a Vegan Diet
  1. Vitamin B12 Deficiency: This vital vitamin is required for the proper functioning of nerves and the formation of blood cells. However, it is exclusively found in animal products. Vegans who do not take supplements are at a high risk of vitamin B12 deficiency.
  2. Bone Health: Vegan foods often lack sufficient calcium and are deficient in vitamin D. Therefore, vegans may face a higher risk of bone fractures and lower bone mineral density.
  3. Absorption of Iron and Zinc: Plant-based foods contain iron, but it is non-heme iron. As a result, the body absorbs this iron content with lower efficiency than the heme iron generally found in meat or animal products.
  4. Omega-3 Fatty Acids: Plant-based diets often lack direct sources of Omega-3 fatty acids. It can be difficult for the body to convert plant-based sources into active forms (EPA and DHA), which are highly required for maintaining brain and heart health.

Healthy Alternatives and Optimisations for Vegans

  • Supplements: Vegans should regularly take a vegan vitamin B12 supplement and consider a vitamin D supplement during the winter.
  • Fortified Foods: Vegans should choose plant milks and cereals fortified with calcium, vitamin D, and vitamin B12.
  • Optimization of Iron Intake: Vegans should combine plant-based sources of iron with vitamin C (for example: lentils with lemon or tomatoes) to boost iron absorption.
  • Adding Healthy Fats: Vegans should add chia seeds, flaxseeds, and walnuts to their daily diet to obtain larger amounts of Omega-3 fatty acids, which are essential for overall brain and heart health.
  • Limitations in Social Gatherings: Vegans might face social challenges, especially during large gatherings or events. This can sometimes make managing meals uncomfortable or difficult.
Different Forms of Vegetarianism
  1. Lacto - Vegetarians: Those who eat dairy products but avoid meat, fish, and eggs.

2.Ovo - Vegetarians: Those who eat eggs but avoid meat, fish, and dairy products.

3.Lacto - Ovo Vegans: Those who eat dairy products and eggs but avoid meat and fish.

4.Vegans: Those who avoid meat, fish, dairy products and eggs.

What is Veganism?

  • Veganism is the strictest form of vegetarianism.
  • While all vegetarian diets exclude meat-related  foods like poultry and fish, vegans restrict their diet entirely to plant-based foods. This means vegans avoid all animal-based foods, including meat, fish, eggs, dairy, and animal byproducts like gelatin.
  • Many vegans also choose to avoid products made by bees, such as honey, as well as processed sugars that may use animal products in the refining process.

Ultimately, some people choose a vegan diet for its potential health benefits, while others adopt it due to ethical, religious, or environmental concerns.

Is a Vegan Diet Right for You?

Precautions:
  1. People suffering from diabetes, heart-related conditions, gastrointestinal issues, those who have undergone bariatric surgery, or pregnant women are strongly advised to consult a registered dietician.
  2. If you are pregnant, nursing, or suffering from a chronic health condition, please consult a registered dietician before choosing a restricted vegan diet.
Disclaimer:
While vegan foods provide many benefits, researchers do not yet fully understand exactly what causes all of these positive effects. Until further research emerges, the best approach is simply to increase the amount of nutrient-rich, whole plant foods in your daily diet.
